art.xxXtenxion 2008 - Overview

Mixed Reality + Bastard Spaces
Breathtaking developments in new media offer new gateways to the work of artists. Used as archive, for presenting works, for linear communications it now unspools new horizons coined as web 2.0. The artist takes position in networks and virtual environments which are still emerging from very basic make believe worlds into more immersive environments of the future. Active participation lights the way to a real glocal approach or to speak with Stephan Doesingers Bastard Space Manifesto: "Ambition and artificial light are the strongest building materials!“ and : "Public space is a media construction.“ art.xxXtenxion 2008 offers workshops, videos, lectures, talks and a mixxXed reality scenario.
art.xxXtenxion 2008 focuses on exchange, participation and insights behind the stage. art.xxXtenxion 2008 international artists-in-residence and guests project.

Machinima Love

Machinima Love
Donnerstag, Juli 24 | Kino Wintergarten im Andreasstadel
presented by Brigit Lichtenegger aka Evo Szuyuan

Machinima is a collection of associated production techniques whereby computer-generated imagery (CGI) is rendered using real-time, interactive 3-D engines, such as those of games instead of professional 3D animation software. The real-time nature of machinima means that established techniques from traditional film-making can be reapplied in a virtual environment. As a result, production tends to be cheaper and more rapid than in keyframed CGI animation. It can also produce more professional appearing production than is possible with traditional at-home techniques, which makes it possible for anyone to make a high quality movie.

Program 1, 20.00h :: Machinima Art Videos

Besides the machinima technique being used for the creation of new movies of imagined stories, it is also widely used for the purpose of documentation, serving as a link between the real world and virtual worlds. In this programm a selection of art documentaries will be shown that highlight some of the most interesting works of art as well a shine a light on the richness and versatily of the Art World as it exists in Second Life.

Bastard Spaces

Bastard Spaces
Freitag, Juli 25, 20:00 | MZ-Medienraum, Margaretenstraße 4
Vortrag von Stephan Doesinger

„ ... The world is a computergame and your heart beats like popcorn. – Inside and Outside are replaced by the terms „Pull“ and „Push“! – Bastard Spaces arise where physical space merges with media space.“ “In the course of the First Annual Architecture and Design Competition in Second Life, I got to know a lot of exciting artists and architects and their thoughts and works. Once again, I discovered that the essence of architecture (physical or virtual) is the “space between” people and how it is organised. (...) Second Life is a catalyst for a debate about something that affects us all—how virtual worlds change our awareness of space. Why do we often get the feeling that reality is insidiously turning into a computer game? How does the virtual world change physical architecture.”

The mixed reality performances of our guests join forces with the inspiration of the artists-in-residence to create an ambitious public moment of Real Time in a bubble of electronic connectedness and networking. The Avatar Orchestra Metaverse will play several pieces including the worldpremiere of „Real Life‘s Waste“ by the italian composer Biagio Francia, who will be performing live with other orchestra members. Simultaneously they play virtually at the art.think.box in Second Life with other members of the orchestra connected from various places in Europe and North America. After the break the avatar Komuso Tokugawa, who brings the Boogie to the bitstream. Live from Tokio (its 4 in the morning there now!) Komuso will rock your dreams, performing and talking to us via Second Life. Maybe some music friends of his come along also... yeAH! From there Dirschl und Starzinger will seduce the crowd into warmhearted poppyland and premiere their avatars getting ready to enchant the world.

Komuso Tokugawa

Komuso Tokugawa
is a multiversed live musician, who creates blues and ambient performances in Second Life. Resident since 2005, he focused on exploring the new medium to develop his virtual live performances and to take part in several collaborative music and research projects. Komuso delivers the best possible sound quality given the current bandwidth and codec constraints of streaming audio to a virtual world. Enjoying groove based boogie the most, he consequently develops a „unique Artificial Intelligence based rythm backing section - fed by his own custom-programmed groove musical seeds. He called them Beato-san und Basso-San, his little robot partners in time. And he has two little robot avatars flying around him in SL to represent them.“

Although being globally distributed (Canada, USA, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Japan), they meet to play and work together in real-time. They do not try to imitate a conventional orchestra, but use the new medium as an instrument, where the generation of a sound can also trigger movements and graphics. The result is a new audio-visual experience, where the audience is witnessing a live-event, played by musicians thousands of miles apart.

in professionelle Produktionsabläufe.

What is machinima? Whats it compared with animation and real cinema? We are talking about game engines, machinima techniques in Hollywood, machinima tools and legal issues. We will put hands on cameras, tools (crazy talk—movie storm ... SL tools), fraps/snapz pro.

John Smith - British Avantgarde Cinema

Donnerstag, Juli 17, 20:00, Kino Wintergarten im Andreasstadel
presented by Deniz Johns
with the friendly support of LUX London

John Smith is one of the greatest avant-garde filmmakers of England. He has made around 40 film, video and installation works since 1975. His films have been shown internationally in cinemas, art galleries and on TV. John Smith‘s cinema is hard to describe, it moves accross the categories and boundaries of fictional narrative, conceptual art and documentary as well as various forms of other avant-garde cinema. The Girl Chewing Gum (1976 UK), probably Smith‘s best known film, is one of the finest examples of British avant-garde films. It explores the link between image and sound, and while enjoying the power of language he questions their relation. And as in his many other films humor arises from this kind of exploration. Om (1986 UK) In this four minute film Smith plays with the spectators aural and visual expectations in a very powerful and humorous way. Museum Piece (2004 GER) is the second episode in the Hotel Diaries series, a collection of video recordings made in various hotel rooms in different countries some of which are Israel, Palastine, Ireland and Germany. This video piece while being a personal film also is a reflection on social and political issues. Museum Piece is the winner of Best International Short Film prize at Cork Film Festival, 2005

In addition, Deniz Johns will show a selection of her own works.
